LINDA AND JACK STEBBINS

Although I was born in Wisconsin, New Mexico is my home.  I switched my loyalty from cheese to chili but continue to be a die hard Green Bay Packer fan.  My husband, Jack Stebbins is from Iowa and after having a career in the Marine Corps, traveling the world, he decided to settle in the “Land of Enchantment” where he chose to be an educator for the Albuquerque Public Schools.  Our 30+ years of marriage have led us down a path of adventure and Gordon Setter experiences.  My husband’s saying is, “I only feed, love and clean up after our Gordon Setters.”  Actually he is a strong supporter of both the breed and me.

My parents raised and trained hunting dogs (Chesapeakes and Labradors) and me at the same time but the essence and art in motion drew me to the setters as I grew older.

For over 25 years we have been involved in the setter families.  In 1978 we had rollicking Irish Setters.  Once our 12 year old passed away, we moved on to the Gordon Setter who stole our hearts and loyalty.  They are at once regal, goofy, gallant and mischievous.  I have been fortunate enough to have co-bred and co-own Esthete English Setters with Jill Warren and Dave Smith of Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Currently we live in the village of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque.  It’s on the Rio Grande River and teems with wild life including Canadian geese and Sandhill Cranes.   We have a carefully preserved Bosque area with bountiful flora and fauna.  Squirrels use our back acre agility equipment daily.

Although my Master’s degree is in both Business and Human Resources, teaching was my profession for 25 years including four years teaching American and English literature at a high school in Yokohama, Japan.  I am retired and enjoy my time with my husband and a passel of fun loving Gordons Setters.  My mom, Jean Sievert, who writes children’s stories translated into Braille lives close by.  Three of her hits about Gordon Setters are, “Lordy, Lordy I’m a Gordy”, “The Gertie Dozen”, and “Gabriel the Gordian Angel”.   Check out her web page displaying her books and brief synopses.

Some of my volunteer activities in the United States dog world range from Chief Ring Steward for the English Setter and Bouvier Nationals to ring stewarding for local and national events, trophy chair, show chair, member of the Judges’ Education Committee, promotional and materials chair, member of the Board of Governors for the Gordon Setter Club of America as well as vice president and president of this organization, board and officer positions for the local Irish Setter Club of Albuquerque, author of articles for the Gordon Setter Review, Gordon Setter Quarterly and Gordon Setter Club of America’s Newsletter and volunteering for anything canine when a helping hand is needed.  Another one of my fun and enjoyable activities was being a 4-H Leader in dog training classes for children of varying ages.  My dedication to the Gordon Setters, the networking with others in the field, the excitement of the performance and show rings lead me to support our breed as much as humanly possible.
